I am attempting to research my father Sydney Whitcombe, who was a navigator and flying officer with RAF 195 Squadron during WW2.  I understand this squadron was formed in Duxford in 1942 and then moved to Lancashire in 1943 which is most likely when my father joined, as he was from that part of the world.  He received a D.F.C. - which unfortunately I don't have - and would be really grateful for any information about Sydney and his crew etc.  I have names of some of his crew - Frank Wil**** (wireless operator) , Len Parsons (bomber) Paddy (air gunner) & Stan Renaut (also air gunner).

I have the 195sqdn Operations Record Book, and would be happy to help out. Can you let me have your email address via my "whiteboard" in my profile, for when i've got information.

Regards....Alan

Have found 38 ops with 195sqdn,  for this crew, but may be more with 115sqdn, as they may have been one of the crews that came from 115 to form 195.

Sorry, but this is a bit of a stock answer, based on my experience.

The first thing you should do (if possible) is to obtain a copy of his service record which will provide you with information on his training and his postings. Details on how you do this, along with the rules and regulations, can be found at: www.gov.uk/requests-for-personal-data-and-service-records. You will have to pay to obtain the record and you should be aware that it is taking between 9 and 12 months for them to be sent out.

Once you have this record, you can establish where he was posted and obtain the Operational Record Books for the squadron(s) he was involved with from the National Archives.; this should provide details of his sorties and crew.

In the meantime if you can provide any dates, or additional snippets, it may help other forum members find information in their own archives.

I hope this is useful; good luck with your research.

Regards

Pete

Thanks Pete, that is very helpful.  I will come back to the forum if I find anything that might be helpful or interesting.  I do have a photo of the  crew members I mentioned, would that be of any interest to anyone?

best wishes

Sally

Hi Sally,

i've got your email, thanks. I'll have a look in the 115sqdn Operations Book, to see if there is anything in there for this crew, before i send anything else on to you.

Alan.
