This file, which is an index of RAF airmen / airwomen, is available as a download [very large file] or you can view it online. If you want to view it online, the Owens W. start at: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/image/Index/C4005884?index=4&page=186
There are quite a few W Owens, but I couldn't see any William Owens without a middle name.
If you can create a list, you should be able to track promotions etc using the online London Gazette, possibly enabling you to eliminate some of them.
I would recommend that you ensure that William Owens is his full name and if you get the opportunity, apply for his service record which will provide details of training and postings.
I hope this information is of use; good luck with your research.
Regards
Pete
