Looking for info on William (Bill) Owens - Lancaster Bomber Pilot, Flight Lieutenant, in WW2 (Survived)

The above info is all I have of my great uncle. I've tried to start researching him but I do not know his Squadron or Service Numbers.

He survived the war, was definitely a pilot / flight lieutenant, name William Owens, born in a village called Sedgefield in Co Durham.

It's a long shot but can anyone help?

Thank you

You may be able to find his service number in the following file at the National Archives: discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/details

This file, which is an index of RAF airmen / airwomen, is available as a download [very large file] or you can view it online. If you want to view it online, the Owens W. start at: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/image/Index/C4005884?index=4&page=186

There are quite a few W Owens, but I couldn't see any William Owens without a middle name.

If you can create a list, you should be able to track promotions etc using the online London Gazette, possibly enabling you to eliminate some of them.

I would recommend that you ensure that William Owens is his full name and if you get the opportunity, apply for his service record which will provide details of training and postings.

I hope this information is of use; good luck with your research.

Regards

Pete

Thanks guys!

Ive found 8 pages of William Owens using the National Archives AIR78 list.

will go through them tonight. Haven't asked my Grandma yet who is the only surviving sibling (82!) so still oppurtunity to find lots from her.

Thanks again.

I will try get his picture up to which might jog some memories or someone might have him in a group photo that includes their relative.

:)
