I'm trying to find out a little about my uncle (fathers brother) who was a Sgt gunner/wireless operator in Short Sterlings during WW2.
I believe but may be wrong he was in 196 squadron and has the unusual name of HAZEL ARTHUR WILLIAM LITTLEWOOD.
From there he went to 62 Squadron in the far east to Burma, Bengal, Rangoon doing supply drops.
His sister thinks he was stationed at Fairfield / Broadwell stations on the Stirlings but I do not think these names are correct. Perhaps something similar sounding.
I can find nothing about him but I do have a photo of him with his crew.
Further to the above, the photo I have of him has only 5 crew which was the crew of a Wellington. 196 squadron changed from Wellingtons to Short Stirlings in July 1943 and they had a crew of 7
AIR 78 (Index of airmen and airwomen) at the National Archives, shows his service number as 1801451. This falls into the range 1800001 to 1814800 which were allocated to men who enlisted at Euston, London from December 1941 through to January 1943.
Not much to go on, but it helps to start to pin things down.
Regards
Pete

No problem .... I suggest that you obtain a copy of his service record which will provide you with information on his training and his postings. Details on how you do this, along with the rules and regulations, can be found at: www.gov.uk/requests-for-personal-data-and-service-records. It is worth noting that more details are made available if you apply as next of kin.
You will have to pay to obtain the record and my understanding is that it is taking months (rather than weeks) for them to be sent out by the record office, so be prepared for a bit of a wait.
Once you have this record, you can establish where he was posted and obtain the Operations Record Books for the squadron(s) he was involved with from the National Archives.; this should provide details of his sorties and crew.
In the meantime if you can provide any dates, or additional snippets, it may help other forum members find information in their own archives.
I hope this is useful; good luck with your research.
Regards
Pete
