My father Henry Reginald Cowley

Hello forum people I am looking for any information about my late father ,Henry Reginald  Cowley (nickname Tim ) who was in Bomber Command in the second world war . He didnt talk about it at all to me , I can now understand , but would like to find out more of what and where he was  He was a radio operator or a navigator , not sure which . Served from 1939 to 1945 .I do know he also served  in Egypt , where he got Malaria, and thats all I know . Can you help ? I hope so thank you Harry Cowley

Sorry, but this is a bit of a stock answer, based on my experience.

The first thing you should do (if possible) is to obtain a copy of his service record which will provide you with information on his training and his postings. Details on how you do this, along with the rules and regulations, can be found at: www.gov.uk/requests-for-personal-data-and-service-records. It is worth noting that more details are made available if you apply as next of kin.

You will have to pay to obtain the record and my understanding is that it is taking months (rather than weeks) for them to be sent out by the record office, so be prepared for a bit of a wait.

Once you have this record, you can establish where he was posted and obtain the Operations Record Books for the squadron(s) he was involved with from the National Archives.; this should provide details of his sorties and crew.

In the meantime if you can provide any dates, or additional snippets, it may help other forum members find information in their own archives.

UPDATE: His service number could be 1212108 (see http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/image/Index/C4004625?index=4&page=238). This falls within the range that was allocated to RAF Cardington for enlistments April 1940 to April 1941

Thank you very much for this info ! Had given up a bit as I seemed to have been getting nowhere , but with dads service number I can start again ,I am starting to get together and reprint an ex R.A.F servicemans book he wrote way back when it was called "Brands Hatch and Beyond" privately published and now much sort after by Vincent motorcycle nuts (like me ) It was written by the late Gordon Colquhoun ,who also wrote about the second world war in a book called "How Many For Breakfast " a very moving and funny and tragic book and very truthfull , this is available ISBN 09520500 1 3 , I intend to reprint the first book , with the familys permission ofcourse and donate the profits to the R.A.F Benevolent Fund in London , I think Gordon would like that and ofcourse my Dad ,not to mention my mother, also , served in bomber command   thank you again Harry cowley
