I live at Betterton Court POCLKINGTON YORK and would welcome any detail of Sgt Betterton. His navigator. Sgt F.H.Brown, RNRAF died 6th may 1943, but there is no record of the rest of the crew Pilot Betterton is recorded to have died on 5th May and is buried at Barmby Moor York(1 mile from Pocklington) with 50 other servicemen. I believe he came from the Bristol area and was in.the RAFVR. aged 32.

I can't find his name on any websight. Most is on the gravestone. All info very welcome. I intend to place poppies on our  Betterton Court road sign on memorial Sunday

Hi Les,

According to Biil Chorley's book they were practicing feathering and after closing down the port outer they lost control and spiralled into the ground at 19.58hrs, near Fridaythorpe.

I'll get back to you with some details on the pilot later.

Regards,

John.

Hi Les,

Sorry mate nothing on the pilot, the Kiwi Nav was Sgt Francis Henry Brown. born at Masterton NZ and was employed as a storeman. He trained as a pilot but failed the course at 3 EFTS in 10 Nov 1941. He started training 20 Dec 1941 but was terminated in Jan 1942. Re-musted as a Nav and went to Canada and passed out and left for the UK on 25 Sept 1942.he went to 15 OTU on 31 Dec 1942 then to 1663 HCU 13 April 1943. He was the son of Samuel Adam & Jessie Brown of Ponsonby Auckland New Zealand.

Regards,

John.
