Hello,

This is my first post to this forum.  I am the grandson of F/S HH Hockley who perished after the crash of the above aircraft on February 23, 1945.  I have the details of the crash from Chrorley, but am looking to see if there are any members of this group that can offer any other information on other members of the crew.  I plan on visiting the UK in March and will visit my grandfather's grave at Harrogate and he is buried beside the other 3 crew members that also perished.  It would be nice to know what happened to the survivors or possibly share some of the information that I have with others in this forum.

Also, if I am only going for a week, is there specific aviation sites or museums that anyone can recommend for us to visit.  I already plan on going to the Museum at Yorkshire and am trying to book a tour of the Halifax that they have restored.  Any other tips would be appreciated.

Thanks for the links.  Yes I was aware but I really appreciate the effort and knowing that the tour is worth the money helps as I am likely footing the bill for my Dad and maybe one of my sons as well biggrin

 

If you have any other suggestions for my trip on what I NEED to see, it would be appreciated.  Thanks again Mike.

Hi Kevin,

The tour was given by a chap named Phil Kemp who was very knowledgeable.  I spent over an hour inside and took plenty of photos (attached a couple you might be interested in). Make sure you take a look in the Air Gunners room.

Its' worth taking a trip to York Minster. Check out the Astronomical Clock in the North transept.  Below the clock face is a glass topped case with a book of remembrance listing all the names of some18,000 allied airmen who died operating from Yorkshire and the North East between 1939 and 1945. A page is turned every day of the year.

Thanks for the tips and for the pics...amazing.  I can't wait to get over there...hopefully we get approved for the tour inside.  Thanks again for the info.  Where are you based?  Have you been to the museum in Trenton Ontario?

Hi Keven,

I have not seen the Halifax at Trenton but have heard its in excellent condition.  I live in Nottingham, England.  Attached is a photo I took many years ago when they wheeled out Friday 13th at Elvington on an Airshow day.  later in the afternoon a B17 and Lancaster flew in and parked either side, it was an amazing day.   If you would like to contact me my email can be found via the whiteboard.

Hi Keven - Please do go and see the Bomber Command chapel in Lincoln Cathedral. It is really inspiring, classic, and tasteful. I defy you to not cry, I remember it and have tears in my eyes right now.!
