Loss of Lancaster R5471 1/2 September 1942
Permalink

My uncle, Leslie George Jones, was the wireless operator on Lancaster R5471 which crashed into the North Sea with the loss of all crew members. They had left Woodhall Spa en route to Saarbrucken when they reported having some technical problems. They were told to ditch some of their load before returning to base but they never made it.

I know it is a long shot but I wondered whether or not there were any relatives of the other crew members who might be able to tell me anything  at all about my uncle or the men who died with him.

The other crew members were - Pilot Rhys Hallam Morgan RCAF, Flight Engineer Alan McNeil, Flight Sgt Air Bomber Raymond Ben Walls RCAF, Sgt Navigator Albert Byrom, Sgt Air Gunner Frederic Peter Coaker and Sgt Rear Air Gunner Alfred Frederick Priest. The only two bodies found were those of the pilot and Sgt Coaker. They are buried at Esbjerg and Lemvig  respectively.

I never knew my uncle but I know the effect his death aged 20 had on the whole family for years afterwards. I have a grandson who is older than many of the brave lads who were facing death everyday and taking on responsibilities they seem too young for.

Any information about any of these men would be very much appreciated however vague the recollection, Thanks.
