Fathers 52 missions

Father was a WW2 pilot.

Initially he was a trainer for fighter pilots.  The local general refused to let pop go to war so he chocked up his trainer and blew out all the head quarters windows. The general wanted pop shot but couldn't find a way to do it. He was a good fighter pilot but the generals want him taken care of and they crentently didn't want him coming back as an ACE or hero. So the powers to be put him in a low altitude bomber hoping the war would take care of him. The plan didn't work. He told me he did 52 missions over Germany. Shot down 2 times. Was fly a low altitude bomber out of Britain. When we drank together he told me many many horror stories but only when we were loaded. He told me on his last mission where was shot down he broke his back was released from service went back to New York to his sisters brother and mother (all deceased). He was given full disability but refused all monies.

After his death I wanted to find out more of his service records so I called and wrote the US government for fathers service records.

Problem

The letter from the government stated there was a fire and his records were some of the ones that were lost.

Question

What were the low altitude bombers used by US service men. The aircraft had a pilot a co pilot and gunners (how many ??) I did some searching and it may have been a Mitchel but I am only guessing.

His name was Edgar Hamill Hughes Jr born New York (I'm the 3rd) he had a nick name eggs

Any help on a list of aircraft or better yet a guy that flew with him.

It could also have been the A-20 Havoc https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_A-20_Havoc or the B-26 Marauder https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_B-26_Marauder

The fire in St Louis https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Personnel_Records_Center_fire

Without a squadron you'll be hardpressed to find out much more.
