Hi everyone, its a pleasure to be here for the first time! My Dad was a skipper with 420 Squadron and 405 Squadron, 1944.

I am currently attempting to write a book, based on his logbook, telling the story of the crew. For the past year I have been working on making contact with all the families of the 6 men who flew with him, and have had some great success, including meeting the last surviving member of the crew, 95 year old Bob McWhirter ( sharp as a tack and a real gentleman!).

I am hoping this forum will help me with some of the unanswered questions I have.

First up:   Can anyone help me track down the family or history of an Englishman name Sgt W. ( wilfred I think) Porter, who was my Dad's flight engineer at Tholthorpe in the spring of 1944. He and my Dad apparently didnt see eye to eye and Porter left the crew , but stayed at 420 squadron and was wounded in November of 1944 when his Halifax crashed upon landing at Leeming, returning from a raid.  Unlike the RCAF, the RAF doesnt seem to have easily accessed online records of all their personnel ( perhaps because of the much larger numbers....? ).

Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Clint.

Hi Clint,

sorry, I cant help with tracking Sgt Porter but the following might be of interest.

21/22 November 1944.

F/Lt J. S. Sefton RCAF and crew, flying Halifax III HX-346 coded PT-U, on operations to Castrop-Rauxel. On return the Halifax hit a tree at Moreton-on-Swale and crash landed near Leeming airfield. The sole fatality, F/O Yarish RCAF, is buried in  Harrogate Stonefall Cemetery. Those who were injured received initial treatment at SSQ Leeming. Sgt Porter being the most seriously hurt with cuts to his left eye and multiple chest injuries.
