RAF Gravely, circa 1942-1943
Permalink

I am searching for information on my Uncle.  All I know is that he was at RAF Gravely in about 1942-1943, and was in the Pathfinders.  I am assuming (for the moment, at least) that this would be 35 Squadron.

His name was Gordon Henry Edward Thompson.  Does anyone have any information?

Many, many thanks, Suzie

Hi Suzie,

My mate says he cant find him as Aircrew at 35 Sqn at that time, he may have been ground crew or station personne, do you have a service number and any details of his service?

Regards,

John.

Hi John, Thank you very much, and please thank your mate for me.  No, I have no details of his service.  He, himself, said he was at RAF Graveley between 42-43ish, was in Srinigar in North India via South Africa and the word Strathairn was mentioned although I can't remember the context of that bit.  He said he flew with Pathfinders.  My Dad and other Uncle said he was Groundcrew.  So a few contradictions.  Suzie

Hi Suzie

Thanks for your feedback; I am the person who responded to John's request.

The Straithaird was a troopship, so this may be linked to his postings overseas,

His service number was 1637084 (serial range 1610001 to 1649900) which means that he enlisted at Cardington between October 1941 and October 1942

Have you applied for his service record as this will tell you his trade(s), postings etc.?  You can apply via https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-service-records (but make sure next of kin applies, otherwise you will only get a redacted copy with information blanked out)

Regards

Pete
